Crysis 3 was announced this week by EA and Crytek and well… it looks a lot like someone smushed parts 1 and 2 together. You’re still in New York (from the last game), but the premise now is that a giant forcefield dubbed the Liberty Dome has encased New York and transformed it into a swampy, jungle (essentially the first game). Besides that ridiculous premise, all we know is that EA and Origin are taking pre-orders and they’ve already detailed pre-order incentives for retail, which basically give you more XP and a flashier gun at launch.

Crytek promises Part 3 will have more open-ended sandbox gameplay that PC gamers prefer and bitched about when Part 2 was more of an on-rails corridor Call of Duty ripoff. To an extent, they had every right to complain. See, Crysis 1 was a benchmark of exquisite gameplay and beautiful graphics when it was released in 2007. In fact, gamers TO THIS DAY mod the original game because Crytek’s ridiculous engine pushes the uncanny valley, to well… an uncanny degree. Add to that, the level design provides a way for gamers to tackle objectives however they see fit. We’d expect nothing less from the creators of the original Far Cry. We’ve literally been stumped on some hi-res pictures people have posted because of how detailed the island environments looked.
When Part 2 went to New York, gamers were initially excited, but gameplay was much more tuned to the Call of Duty stop-and-pop frenetic style, while only allowing a few paths to your destination. On top of that, CryEngine 2.0 was released, enabling Crytek to scale their games to consoles. PC gamers balked because now they had to share their beloved Crysis with the masses and knew that they wouldn’t see the ridiculous high-end graphics touted for the sequel, if in fact they were “dumbed-down” for older console hardware. But… that’s pretty much what happened. Don’t get us wrong. Crysis 2 is still gorgeous, but PC gamer outrage was ridiculous a year ago.
Crytek and EA tried to make good by releasing the original Crysis on PSN and XBLA a few months ago, and while it looks no where near the eye-blistering detail of the PC behemoth, it’s much more than a shadow of its former glory. It’s still worth playing (but in all fairness, the save system is ABYSMAL). If you can, play it on Steam/Origin. You won’t regret it.
Anyway, Part 3 shoves you in the Liberty Dome and has you fighting aliens and (probably) soldiers in other Nanosuits, but North Koreans are doubtful at this point. Also, looks like you get a fancy bow and arrow, which is super hi-tech. Crysis 3 will be available in 2013. It’ll probably look pretty good.
MAXIMUM STRENGTH.

I’m a latecomer to the Crysis franchise, having only gotten into it with Crysis 2. But Crysis 2 was absolutely awesome, and I am converted. Let’s DO this.
