Sup gamers,

The new Sonic 4 Episode 2 trailer has hit the web and it being in glorious 2D HD, our eyes tell us that it looks rather fun. Worlds seem to include an amusement park (with some snowy goodness), a fortress of sorts and some quality time to spend underwater. So why the trepidation? Well, every time there’s a new Sonic game out, we poop our pampers and get super excited that something we loved at its prime in the nineties was back! But why do we keep clamoring for a new Sonic regardless of its quality?

Because Sonic the Hedgehog has turned into a pathetic character from a romantic comedy. We used to date Sonic and it was good. We look back on Sonic with fond memories. He pops up then and again to remind us that he’s not going anywhere. But, if Sonic has turned into a a cliched movie/sitcom character, then we’ve become the abused lover of a relationship, blind to all the malice caused us and eager to welcome the little rodent back. Why do we do this?! Why do we forget the past so easily?

Sonic 4 Episode 1 was….ok. Sure, it was fun going back to 2D and the number 4 made us think that maybe Sega and Sonic Team struck gold. And then we downloaded the game and were able to walk Sonic up slopes, thereby disproving everything Issac Newton taught us.

In an interview with Gamespot, the Sonic 4 Ep 2 developers remarked that there was in fact a new physics engine for the sequel. We sincerely hope so because despite Sonic’s near-annual releases, the character hasn’t been relevant in forever. And on top of that, Sonic is by no means a character that stands the test of time. Shitty games and gameplay will do that. That’s why you can do new Mega Man installments. Rockman is solid, yo.

Okay, okay. Sonic 4 Episode 2 has a fancy new team-up spindash with Tails and we can all hail the return of Metal Sonic. But… will this be enough to warrant a purchase? Who isn’t desensitized to Sonic the Hedgehog? We need to meet that person and hail them as the most forgiving person in the world. Or the dumbest.
