Dear Reader,
First off, apologies for the shoddy visual quality of these posts. Our WordPress image processing is a little weird at the moment. Should be fixed ASAP.
Have you, by chance, wandered over to www.modernwarfare3.com? I know what you’re thinking: why would I want to watch Activision give itself a sensual back rub over its next cash cow in a long, proud line of cash cows? Think again.
You see, much to their chagrin, Activision doesn’t own www.modernwarfare3.com. That domain space was seized by several geniuses who have built a page dedicated to lampooning the franchise. For a while, Activision bit its tongue, but when the site started actively redirecting visitors to EA’s “Battlefield 3” page, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Activision is now petitioning for control of the domain space officially. Here’s hoping they don’t get it, and these merry internet pranksters continue their breathless campaign of truth for months to come.

Hehe that’s an epic troll right there.
Activision probably should have had the foresight to purchase that domain name when they were working on Modern Warfare 2 (as well all know…everything nowadays is fucking sequels anyway), and barring any actual law, Activision didn’t purchase the site and this move seems to be more out of butthurt than anything else. I can’t argue with them because I would do the same thing, and even way before this transpired. Of course, I wouldn’t be rehashing the same old shit either, but I digress. Why no, I haven’t played any of the Call of Duty games, but yes, I’m pretty sure not much is new.
They do seem to have a good case however and will probably win. I mean, that’s sorta like buying a domain named FinalFantasyXV. Good luck keeping your mitts on something like that!
Are you so sure you wouldn’t rehash if you were Actvision? Put yourself in their position: they incur minimal costs, and yet reap continually escalating rewards. In a tough economy, they’re making money, and the fans even seem to like it.
I’m not saying it’s perfectly dignified, it’s crass manipulation, but damned if it doesn’t work.
I’m not overwhelmingly familiar with the law concerning web domains. I’d love to see them lose this case, though. Things as great as this don’t come along often.
And yeah, how in the HELL did they not buy that domain?
It’s one hell of a gross oversight, that’s for sure.
There’s something in the suit if you read it, that claims whoever’s got the domain isn’t using it “in good faith” (whatever the hell that means) and they have no interest in the site. Whose to say they don’t? Sounds like a bunch of whining to be honest and all they do is list MW and MW2’s awards and crap, like that means they should by all rights own the rights to the site that someone else bought. What?
Sadly, I have a feeling Activision will win because they have more money. Or, maybe whoever owns it now will settle out of court and Activision will go all Resident Evil 4 merchant “Ahhh! I’ll buy it at a high price!”
Well, “petition” rather, not suit.
Dude, I freakin LOVE that you just referenced the RE4 merchant. I actually run a Facebook group called “Ah, I’ll buy it at a high price!” Long live the merchant.
I think “good faith” implies that they’re just running the site to be dicks to Activision, not in any sincere interest on its own. I have no clue if there’s any legal weight to that. But you’re right, Activision has money.
The merchant was like half the game, seriously!
But yeah, they fucked up “good faith” when they linked to the Battlefield 3 site.
