Yesterday, David O. Russell, director of Three Kings and last year’s well received The Fighter, has abandoned helming the Uncharted feature film.  Though Russell is a talented director, I’m rather relieved he’s gone, as are most gamers.  Rumor is that Russell left the project over creative differences, which shocks absolutely no gamer following the project.  Quotes from Russell had shed light on his vision of Uncharted, which dealt with a powerful family that ruled the world of museums, dealing out justice and antiquities.  In other words, a film that had a character named Nathan Drake (played by Mark Wahlberg, who is also leaving the project), but really nothing to do with the jungle adventures of the original Uncharted title.

Sony is still moving forward with the project, but they’re reverting back to an early, more Uncharted-esque script.  However, without a lead and a director, the project is still in a dangerous place.  Here’s hoping that the film bucks the video game movie trend and is an actual film worth watching.  I have no doubt that Uncharted could be a great film, here’s hoping that Sony puts their top people on the project.

  1. nooo!! you’ll seriously never know what you’re missing. they’ll just get some shlock director and the studio heads will try to make a movie that cheaply panders to the masses. david o russell is a tits director and has the clout to buck studio wishes and do what he wants. and so what if it would differ from the video game? if you want to watch the video game, then just play the video game.
it would have been a terrific movie. now you’re going to get something like “Hitman”.

    • First of all, “Hitman” was not THAT bad a film. The central relationship between 47 and Nika was actually kind of interesting, there was some decent action, and even if Timothy Olyphant was miscast (and he definitely was), he’s still a cool dude and I like his work. I give it a solid B-, which is more than I can say about most game movies.

Secondly, I don’t think David O Russell had his eye on the prize. As Eric noted, he was talking a big game about a story that was nowhere NEAR what “Uncharted” is really about. As a die-hard lover of the series, I’m relieved to see him go.

Also, “The Fighter” sucked. There I said it.

  2. Russell was going to direct the film adaptation of “Pride Prejudice and Zombies” -I wonder if he’s going to jump back on it now that he’s off Uncharted!!!
