The very word strikes fear into the heart of civilized peoples around the world. Every year these parasites travel their migratory patterns across the internet, searching for the things they need to survive and not caring who gets in their way. For food, they subsist off of their own self-satisfaction, which they generate through insults against a rival tribe, or by pointing out 'facts' that are usually either logical fallacies or outright mistruths. Fascinating creatures. For shelter, they take up residence whereever they can find those belonging to their tribe, and usually whereever there are as many rival tribe members as possible. Amazing creatures. For their mating drive, they are able to satiate themselves solely on the belief that somewhere out there there are thousands of women who would do them at the drop of a hat. Crikey.
The fanboy has, in the past few generations, had an unending supply of ammunition to fuel their personal fires. The fact that there have been three major consoles, and now two handhelds as well, seems to have driven the irrationality up, not down. Camps are now further divided than they ever have been before, and with the advent of the internet's anonymity, the tactics have become increasingly more ruthless.
Most of the past two years, though, have been relatively quiet. The Wii enjoyed its little niche, and because it was so different, fans of it were content to be fans of another system as well. The PS3 and PSP were tanking for the most part, so due to this fact, you had a full 1/3 of the fanboy community sitting on its hands in hushed disappointment, anxiously hoping the plastic in their hands would one day be worth something. The relative calm on the internet was quite enjoyable, really. Then things had to go and change. Goddammit.
Thanks to an increasing amount of non-shovelware like Smash Bros and Mario Kart Wii, the Wii is starting to be seen as less of a niche, more of a member of the Big 3 again. Games like Crisis Core and Monster Hunter (wtf??) have driven PSP sales to levels no one could have suspected prior to their announcement. MGS4 and the recent success of Blu-Ray have saved the PS3 from the brink of extinction. What do all of these things have in common?
They're all exclusives. In the end, when you have systems that have pretty much the same capability (let's exclude Nintendo systems from the argument for one second), the only real differences you have are the games available on each system. This is the factor that will defy all others: hardware reliability, controller preference, online supremacy. Consumers will ignore these factors if they can only get the game they really want to play on a certain system. Even the Wii and DS, with their lack of graphical power, make up for this with their unique gameplay, which many treat as an "exclusive" itself. Assuming graphics aren't an issue and the controls are as tight as you could possibly want, would you rather play something like Burnout on the Wii or the 360?
So in the end... exclusives are to blame. Now I'm not saying every game should be on every system, just that the sheer amount of such good exclusives are what fuel a fanboy's rage. That, and whatever system their parents happened to get them for Christmas. Just disregard any other arguments, ok? PS3 does this, 360 does that, Wii only has waggle, blah blah blah STOP IT. It's the games that matter, ok? None of this "My console's dick is bigger than your console's dick" bullshit.
Here are a list of the upcoming exclusives for the Big 3. When all is said and done, pick your console preference off of the games and stop wagging its dick around in front of the rest of us, ok?

Woah! Say it ain’t so! This news is a heartbreaker. (Sorry,
that was awful and I know it.)
Following on the heel’s of our news from almost two weeks
ago of the departure of Tomonobu Itagaki from Tecmo, the story delivers us
another tremendous one-two punch combo to the gut. The first blow was struck by
the Tecmo staff, the second by their corporate slave-masters. It seems that
Tecmo as a company may be in a crap-load of trouble, and that can only mean bad
news for us gamers who love their products.
Two weeks ago, Tomonobu Itagaki left Tecmo, citing disputes
over unpaid benefits and ‘emotional damages’. What these damages were was
unclear; what WAS clear was that Tecmo had just lost their main idea man,
responsible for everything from Ninja Gaiden to Dead or Alive, basically
everything good Tecmo ever released.
While there were rumors that a few of Tecmo’s other
developers would join Itagaki in his protest of the company, no one was
prepared for the ENTIRE STAFF OF 300 to walk out on their jobs Tuesday, and
file a class action law-suit against the company. That’s right folks, Tecmo has
essentially closed its doors.
The suit claims that Tecmo’s corporate leaders instituted a
‘sliding schedule’ program four years ago that essentially gipped the workers
out of 100 hours of overtime every month. The company is claimed to have
violated many labor laws, and then illegally doctored their paper work to cover
it up. Government business investigators are looking into the claims now. The
suit would require Tecmo to pony up $77,000. I’m no expert I
assume that’s to each employee (I can’t find a place in the suit that
specifies it…but pretty likely.).
Tecmo then made their move today by placing a four part
injunction against Itagaki that functions as a gag-order, preventing him from
speaking about the company or revealing company secrets in any way that might
damage Tecmo, under threat of legal action. Tecmo is digging trenches and looks
to be preparing to go to court to fight the suit, rather than settle. Their
gagging Itagaki would be the first step in stopping slander from reaching a
jury, or having the company image be ruined for their post-suit business
dealings with partners Sony and Microsoft.
We can only hope that a resolution is reached quickly
and equitably for both sides, so that the industry does not suffer the loss of
one of its pioneers. Tecmo isn’t the most productive company out there, but it
has many memorable titles under its belt. It would be a shame to have their games’
names be sullied by a legal dispute… the DOA movie did that well enough
already.
You give Star Wars a bad name. We’ve known an animated movie was in the works, and now we get our first taste:
http://www.starwars.com/video/
My feelings in one word: Silly. Yeah, I said it. I think it’s cool that Lucas wants to take Star Wars in a new direction...just not this direction. I can’t place what exactly it is about this art style that doesn’t sit with me. It's strange, since I enjoyed the animated series (2D), but don’t care for this style (3D). I’ll have you keep in mind, though, that from this movie will come a TV show, and the animation quality may have been chosen to keep costs down over the course of a series.
I’m sure I’ll be called a heathen, and I’m sure the true Star Wars fans will rally behind it. Above all, I’m not saying it’s going to suck. Just that, for now, it looks silly.
In the mean time, I’ve mostly dropped GTA4 and Mario Kart in favor of a newcomer - Boom Blox for Wii. The name isn’t very confidence inspiring, cover art doesn’t help, and it’s from our beloved “WE BUY EVERYTHING” EA, but it’s actually the best implementation of the Wiimote I’ve seen since Super Mario Galaxy. In short, this is the kind of game I wanted when I first saw the Wii revealed - not a rehash, not a port, something totally original on the only console brave enough to step away from the norm in this generation. Rejoice.
Describing Boom Blox is almost impossible, and any attempt usually makes the game sound even worse, but Jenga references help, i.e. Jenga meets Lemmings meets Breakout. It’s a blast, and addictive to boot. If you’re still not sure, EGM gave it A’s across the board, and GameRankings gives it an average of 85.6% - pretty damn good for a Wii game that isn’t from Nintendo.
